Puncture Repair Done Properly — Not Just a Plug
A lot of what gets called a puncture repair is a plug pushed in from the outside of the tyre. That stops the air leak, but it is not a permanent repair, and it does nothing about damage you cannot see.
A proper tyre puncture repair takes the tyre off the wheel, inspects the inside for hidden damage, prepares the injury, and fits a combined plug-and-patch that seals both the hole and the inner liner. That is the method set out in British Standard BS AU 159, and it is how every CarPal repair is carried out.
Done that way, a repaired tyre is restored to full service for the rest of its life. Done the quick way, you are driving on a tyre nobody has actually looked inside.

- If it is repairable, we repair it to BS AU 159, refit, rebalance and check the pressure. If it is not, we tell you why and can fit a new tyre on the spot.

Can My Puncture Be Repaired?
Not every puncture can be repaired, and anyone who promises otherwise before seeing the tyre is guessing. Under BS AU 159 a repair is possible when:
- The puncture is in the central three-quarters of the tread — not the shoulder or sidewall
- The hole is no more than 6mm across
- The tyre has not been driven on while flat
- The tyre is otherwise sound, with legal tread and no other damage
- It does not overlap an earlier repair
A nail or screw in the middle of the tread is usually repairable. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder is not, because that part of the tyre flexes constantly and no repair will hold. We will give you a straight answer once we have seen it.
Picked up a nail? Do not pull it out
While it is in place it is partly sealing the hole. Pull it out and the tyre may go flat immediately. Leave it, check the pressure, and call us.

Slow Puncture Repair
If one tyre needs topping up every week while the others hold their pressure, you have a slow puncture. Tyres lose a little air naturally — around 1 to 2 PSI a month — but anything faster than that on one corner is a leak.
The cause is usually one of four things: a small object in the tread, a leaking valve, a corroded or kerb-damaged wheel rim stopping the tyre sealing properly, or a puncture so small it is almost invisible. We find it, then fix whichever it is. Rim and valve leaks are often quicker and cheaper than a tread repair.
It is worth doing rather than living with. A tyre you keep topping up spends most of its time under-inflated, which wears it faster, costs fuel, and builds heat.

Puncture Repair FAQs
How much does a puncture repair cost?
From £35 for a car tyre, including callout, internal inspection, the repair and rebalancing. If the tyre cannot be repaired, a replacement starts from £65 fitted.
Can you repair a puncture in the sidewall?
No. Sidewall and shoulder punctures cannot be safely or legally repaired, because that part of the tyre flexes constantly. The tyre has to be replaced.
Do you repair van tyres?
Yes — vans and light commercial vehicles, from £45.
How long does a puncture repair take?
Usually 20 to 40 minutes once we arrive.
Is a puncture repair as good as a new tyre?
A repair carried out properly to BS AU 159 restores the tyre to full service for the rest of its life. A plug pushed in from outside does not.
Can a run-flat tyre be repaired?
Usually not. Once a run-flat has been driven on while deflated, the sidewall may have hidden damage, and most manufacturers advise replacement.
Can I drive on a punctured tyre?
Only if it is still holding pressure, and only far enough to get it repaired. Driving on a flat tyre destroys it within a very short distance and can damage the wheel.
I used a sealant kit — can you still repair it?
Often yes, but tell us when you call. Sealant has to be cleaned out before a proper repair, and it can affect tyre pressure sensors.
