Why Do Car Batteries Fail?
The average car battery lasts between 3 and 5 years — but UK driving conditions often accelerate that decline. Short urban journeys, which make up the majority of daily driving across British cities, mean the alternator never gets enough time to fully recharge the battery. Over weeks and months of partial charging, sulphation builds up inside the battery cells and permanently reduces capacity.
Cold winters make things worse. A battery that is already at 70% health may start your car fine in July but fail completely on a frosty January morning — because cold temperatures reduce battery output by up to 50% and simultaneously increase the power needed to turn a cold engine.
Modern vehicles compound the problem further. Stop-start systems, dashcams left plugged in overnight, phone chargers, seat heaters, and the constant background draw of infotainment systems all put extra demand on batteries that older cars never experienced. The result is that battery failure has become the single most common roadside breakdown cause in the UK — accounting for over 40% of all callouts.
Signs Your Battery Needs Replacing
- Engine cranks slowly or hesitates before starting — especially in cold weather
- Stop-start system has disabled itself or works inconsistently
- Battery warning light on the dashboard
- Headlights or interior lights are noticeably dimmer than usual
- Battery has gone flat more than once in recent months
- Vehicle is over 4 years old and the battery has never been changed
- Electrical gremlins — radio resetting, windows behaving oddly, warnings appearing
- Your car starts fine but the battery warning light appears during driving
If you notice any of these signs, call us before you end up stranded. A battery health test takes under 5 minutes and tells us immediately whether the battery needs replacing.
Our Mobile Battery Replacement Process
- Call or WhatsApp with your vehicle registration number and your location. We identify the exact battery specification for your vehicle — standard lead-acid, AGM, or EFB — before attending, so we arrive with the right battery every time.
- Our technician arrives with the correct battery for your vehicle and a professional digital battery tester. We do not guess — we test your existing battery first to confirm it is genuinely failing and replacement is needed.
- We fit the new battery using the correct procedure for your vehicle. Some vehicles — particularly BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen Group models — require battery registration and software coding after replacement. We carry the diagnostic equipment to perform this on site.
- After fitting, we test the charging system (alternator output) to confirm it is charging the new battery correctly. A faulty alternator will drain and kill a new battery within weeks — we check this every time.
- We remove and dispose of your old battery responsibly. Car batteries contain lead and acid — they must be recycled correctly, not put in domestic waste.
Most battery replacements take 30–45 minutes from arrival. Vehicles requiring coding may take up to 60 minutes.
Battery Types We Supply and Fit
Standard Lead-Acid Battery — from £95 fitted
Suitable for older vehicles without stop-start systems, regenerative braking, or high electrical loads. Lead-acid is the most established battery technology and the most economical option. If your vehicle was manufactured before approximately 2010 and does not have stop-start, this is likely the correct type.
AGM Battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) — from £145 fitted
AGM batteries are mandatory for vehicles with stop-start systems, regenerative braking, or high electrical demands. This includes the vast majority of cars manufactured after 2012. Fitting a standard lead-acid battery in a vehicle that specifies AGM will result in premature failure — often within weeks — because standard batteries cannot withstand the repeated deep cycling that stop-start systems require.
Vehicles that commonly require AGM: BMW 1, 3, 5, 7 Series and X range — Mercedes A, C, E, S Class — Volkswagen Golf, Passat, Tiguan — Audi A3, A4, A6 — Seat, Skoda, MINI and most modern Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, and Peugeot models with stop-start. When you call us with your registration, we confirm the exact specification required.
EFB Battery (Enhanced Flooded Battery) — from £115 fitted
EFB is a step up from standard lead-acid and is used as the factory-fit battery in many smaller cars with basic stop-start systems. It handles repeated partial charging better than standard lead-acid but is less capable than AGM for heavy stop-start use. Fitting EFB where AGM is specified — or vice versa — will cause early failure.
Leisure and Auxiliary Batteries — from £85
For motorhomes, campervans, and vehicles with separate leisure battery systems. We also supply and fit 12V auxiliary batteries for electric vehicles (Tesla, Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, etc.) — separate from the high-voltage drive battery.
Battery Coding — What It Is and Why It Matters
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda), and several other manufacturers require the vehicle’s battery management software to be updated after a battery replacement. This process is called battery registration or coding.
Without coding, the vehicle’s ECU still thinks the old, weaker battery is fitted and charges it incorrectly. The new battery is either overcharged (shortening its life) or undercharged (leaving it permanently partly flat). In BMW vehicles, failing to code the battery after replacement can cause the stop-start system to disable itself and trigger a battery warning light even though the new battery is perfectly healthy.
CarPal technicians carry professional diagnostic equipment capable of performing battery registration coding for BMW, Mercedes, VW Group, and other vehicles that require it. We always confirm whether coding is needed for your specific vehicle before attending.

Frequently Asked Questions — Car Battery Replacement
Q: How do I know what battery my car needs?
A: Give us your vehicle registration number when you call and we will identify the exact specification — including whether AGM, EFB, or standard lead-acid is required, and what CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) rating is needed. Never assume one battery type fits all — fitting the wrong type causes early failure.
A: A jump start is a rescue, not a repair. If your battery has genuinely failed (not just gone flat through leaving a light on), a jump start will get the engine running but the battery will fail again — possibly the next time you stop. Our battery test tells you immediately whether replacement is needed.
Q: Does the battery need to be coded after replacement?
A: Give us your vehicle registration number when you call and we will identify the exact specification — including whether AGM, EFB, or standard lead-acid is required, and what CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) rating is needed. Never assume one battery type fits all — fitting the wrong type causes early failure.
Q: Can I just jump start my car instead of replacing the battery?
A: For many modern vehicles — especially BMW, Mercedes, and VW Group cars — yes. We carry diagnostic coding equipment and include coding in our replacement price where required. Tell us your vehicle make and model when you call and we will confirm.
Q: How long will a new battery last?
A: A quality battery fitted correctly should last 4 to 6 years in typical UK driving conditions. Short urban journeys shorten battery life. If you predominantly do short trips, consider a battery conditioner or periodic longer runs to ensure full charging.
Q: Can you replace the battery on a hybrid or electric vehicle?
A: Hybrid vehicles have a 12V auxiliary battery in addition to the high-voltage traction battery — we replace the 12V auxiliary battery. Electric vehicles also have a 12V auxiliary battery that can fail — we replace these too. We do not work on high-voltage traction batteries.
Q: How quickly can you reach me?
A: Most UK locations within 30 to 60 minutes. Battery replacement takes 30 to 45 minutes once we arrive. Tell us your location when you call and we will give you an accurate time.
Q: Is it safe to fit a battery in bad weather?
A: Yes — we work in all weather conditions including rain, frost, and cold temperatures. We take precautions to protect the vehicle’s electrical system during the process.
